Airing your Laundry

This image was shot recently in Italy.  In the small coastal village of Riomaggiore, people hang their laundry out to dry and while walking the steeply sloped streets of colour, I was looking for a way to capture this with some interest.  The idea of photos of laundry hanging out doesn't sound like something anyone would want to see, but it was actually quite beautiful to the eye and part of the feeling of the village.  This shot, looking up, captures bed sheets hanging out between vibrant colourful buildings.  The image feels like a painting to me and without some explanation, its abstract qualities conceal its nature for a few moments, increasing interest over a literal shot.

This image was captured when I noticed the combination of laundry and a skull in a window.  Standing there looking at it, the scene became playful as I imagined the skeleton hiding behind the door, embarrassed because he's wearing no clothes.  Yes, my mind works in strange ways :)

It is quite common to also see people airing their shoes in their windows.  As I walked by this window, I was immediately drawn to the simplicity and geometry of this image.

It can be a lot of fun to wander about a place you've never been, seeing it with fresh eyes, and capturing some creative views of it.
